Funeral services for Ira Thomas, age 90, of Sulphur Springs, Texas, will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, July 10, 2010 at Morning Chapel C.M.E. Church with Rev. Furgus Jacobs officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery with Reggie Thomas, Oscar Thomas, Mario Thomas, Tony Thomas, Benard Vaughn and Andrew Wright serving as pallbearers. Ravis Thomas, Bob Thomas, Lewis Hawkins, David Thomas, Ira Lee Thomas and Carl Thomas Jr. will serve as honorary pallbearers.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Friday evening at Tapp Funeral Home.
Ira Thomas was born February 21, 1920, in the Pleasant Hill Community of East Texas, the son of Ive and Dollie Collard Thomas, He married Pearl Francis Thomas January 10, 1947. She preceded him in death on June 18, 2010. Mr. Thomas was employed with Hollywood Brands for a number of years and with B.F. Ashcroft for more than 53 yeas. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII. In honor of his military duty the Hopkins County Military Coalition will conduct graveside military burial rites. Mr. Thomas was a member of Evening Chapel C.M.E. Church. Mr. Thomas passed away July 6, 2010 after a sudden illness.
Surviving family includes his daughter; Elizabeth Shaw of Sulphur Springs, adopted grandson; Tremayne Jones, one brother; Carl Thomas, Sr., grandchildren; Mona Lisa Jones of Arlington, TX, Glinda Ross and husband Willie of Longview, TX, Jane Matthew of Sulphur Springs, Tina Lewis and husbnad Cameron of Rowlett, TX, James C. Sims, Jr., of Brownwood, TX, 18 great-grandchildren and 29 great-great-granchildren and a host of nieces and nephew and friends.
Mr. Thomas was preceded in death by his parents, 9 brothers, 3 sisters and one great-grandson, Ivan Keith Sims.
